This project is about much more than just feeding people. it’s about creating a place where people experiencing loneliness and social isolation know they are welcome and can feel part of their community.
“I’m house bound and unable to get anywhere by myself, this event is the only time I get out and can connect with others. I’m forever grateful for the invention of the hoist bus and for all the work everyone has put in to make this happen”
how it works
A Beautiful Food Experience is bringing joy to people’s lives by connecting local businesses, creating volunteering opportunities and engaging community services to invite people who would otherwise not have the chance to experience sharing food and conversation in a safe and inviting space.
It’s all about community, connections and feeling good!
Thanks to support from the City of Port Phillip each month our South Melbourne project puts on a monthly lunch for up to 100 people experiencing social isolation and loneliness by:
Connecting restaurants to each prepare and donate 20 restaurant quality meals
Building volunteering opportunities for locals who want to help
Utilising the restaurant spaces to host lunches on non-trading days
Inviting local community services to bring along their clients to enjoy an afternoon out
Our vision is to grow and replicate this model in many local communities... wherever there are restaurants we can connect and people needing some joy in their lives... we’re sure A Beautiful Food Experience can and will thrive...
This is a scalable model that we believe can revolutionise the way the hospitality industry gives back. We’re making it easy to work together to each do a little bit that is achievable. e.g. preparing an extra 20 meals a month, volunteer to help serve a couple of times a year, donating flowers for the tables.
It's up to each restaurant and volunteer to decide what they bring to the table. We’ll do the rest; coordinating community service bookings, teams of volunteers and contributions from other local business.
How it all began
In late 2017, Alan owner of Köy Restaurant had an idea that he wanted to give back to the community by doing something directly with his business that could make a real difference in the local community; something that would bring happiness to those going through tough times.
Alan approached his friend Alischa, who is experienced leading community development projects and together they teamed up to create a simple, sustainable model to make this happen.
With support from the City of Port Philip, South Melbourne Market and powered by the generosity of 4 other local restaurants, Simply Spanish, Paco Y Lola, Claypots Evening Star-South Melbourne Market and Bambu South Melbourne, ‘A Beautiful Food Experience’ pilot project was born in May 2018…
This is just the beginning of how we believe we can revolutionise the way the hospitality industry gives back by working together to each do a little bit that is achievable.
Let’s work together to send a message that we’re all welcome to sit at the table, to feel happiness and be included in our communities though the joy of sharing food!
Inspired? Go on, get in touch and get involved.
‘Food is so much more than just a means to an end; the simple act of sharing a meal is all about connections, emotions and memories; it’s medicine for the soul.’
